Bunny of My Dreams

Lula, Lula, Lula. It is the magazine of my dreams. Every picture is ethereal and haunting. Every article seems like a daydream. I am in a stage of arrested development, and Lula caters to my longing of little girl simplicities. Lula is abundant with girls flouncing around in pretty dresses. Guest stars include Zooey Deschanel, Kirsten Dunst, and Clemence Poesy. Lula is an obscure magazine that only comes out twice a year, and back issues can sell for over $100 on eBay. I own issues 2, 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8. I'm on eBay every day hunting for issues 1 and 3. The 9th issue just came out with the beautiful red head and wife of Jack White, Karen Elson. I've been visiting Barnes and Noble almost every day searching for it. It's a special treasure when I finally find it.

Werebunny

Some of my friends make fun of me for being obsessed with the Twilight Saga. I can't help it; it speaks to my inner teenage vampire. The franchise might seem kind of lame, but Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson are cool! I swear. And it didn't surprise me that there were some cool bands on the Twilight soundtrack (Muse, Iron and Wine), and there are even more indie bands on the New Moon soundtrack (and thank god no Linkin Park). I about lost my shit when I saw the track listing:

1. Death Cab for Cutie – Meet Me On the Equinox
2. Band of Skulls – Friends
3. Thom Yorke – Hearing Damage
4. Lykke Li – Possibility
5. The Killers – A White Demon Love Song
6. Anya Marina – Satellite Heart
7. Muse- I Belong To You (New Moon Remix)
8. Bon Iver & St. Vincent- Rosyln
9. Black Rebel Motorcycle Club – Done All Wrong
10. Hurricane Bells – Monsters
11. Sea Wolf- The Violet Hour
12. OK Go – Shooting the Moon
13. Grizzly Bear With Victoria Legrand– Slow Life
14. Editors – No Sound But the Wind
15. Alexandre Desplat – New Moon (The Meadow)

All of the songs are new and were made for the New Moon soundtrack. I can't wait to hear the new Killers song.

Members of Death Cab have admitted that they have read the Twilight books and like them. So just stop being pretentious, and admit that Twilight is cool. You secretly love it.

Other Awesome Soundtracks:

1. (500) Days of Summer
2. Marie Antoinette
3. Moulin Rouge!
4. Adventureland
5. Hedwig and the Angry Inch
6. Velvet Goldmine
7. Labyrinth
8. Sweeney Todd
9. The Rocky Horror Picture Show
10. Coraline

Future awesome soundtrack:

Where the Wild Things Are (Karen O. put it together!)

Evidence that I am a Twilight Sucker:

1.
Twilight Venom by DuWop.
Urban Outfitters

2.
I bought this ring on Etsy. It reminded me of the apple on the cover of Twilight. Sad.

3.
Twilight Jacket by BB Dakota. Not really my style, but I bought it. It was obviously a weak moment.

The Mighty Boonny

Howard Moon (Julian Barratt) and Vince Noir (Noel Fielding)

Julian Barratt and Noel Fielding

I probably develop at least one new obsession every week. Lately, it has been the BBC comedy, The Mighty Boosh. It is completely ridiculous, and you have to be ridiculous and familiar with fashion and music to appreciate it. It stars Julian Barratt as Howard Moon (jazz maverick, poet) and Noel Fielding as Vince Noir (goth fairy, midnight barber). Anyone who knows me would recognize instantly that I have a huge crush on the latter. He's obsessed with fashion, hair and glam rock. He enjoys wearing makeup and doesn't mind putting on a dress. He is often mistaken as Howard's lady friend or wife. Ever since I was a little girl, I have been attracted to effeminate men (David Bowie as Jareth the Goblin King in Labyrinth). This brings me to a whole other topic: transvestites. I guess I'm just a girly girl and I prefer my men to be girly as well. Nothing says "confidence" like a man who is comfortable enough with his sexuality that he can put on a dress and makeup. Some might say, "Uhhh... those kind of men wouldn't have any interest in you." Not all transvestites are gay, mind you. Eddie Izzard, anyone? And a few months ago I read an awesome book entitled Debbie Harry Sings in French by Meagan Brothers. The main character, Johnny, is straight, but he is obsessed with Debbie Harry from Blondie and discovers that he likes to dress like her and it's okay. Anyway, I would just like to confirm that I can't stop thinking about Noel Fielding/Vince Noir. I hope the rumors are true and there will be a Mighty Boosh movie.

Top Five Transvestites in Film:

1. Hedwig in Hedwig and the Angry Inch

Hands down.

2. Ed Wood in Ed Wood

Johnny Depp in drag? Yes, please.

3. Dr. Frank-N-Furter in The Rocky Horror Picture Show

Don't get strung out by the way he looks. Don't judge a book by its cover.

4. Patrick "Kitten" Braden in Breakfast on Pluto

Possibly the prettiest transvestite. Cillian Murphy is up there with Candy Darling.

5. Angel in Bad Education

Damn.

"Something extremely interesting was happening in men's fashions, too -- they were starting to compete in glamour and marketing with women's fashions, and this signaled big social changes that went beyond fashion into the question of sex roles. Now a lot of the men with fashion awareness who'd been frustrated for the last couple of years telling their girlfriends what to wear could start dressing themselves up instead. It was all so healthy, people finally doing what they really wanted, not having to fake it by having an opposite-sex person around to act out their fantasies for them -- now they could get right out there and be their own fantasies." - Andy Warhol (who dabbled in transvestism)

Down the rabbit hole...

I have been putting off making a post about Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland, because ever since the pictures of Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter and Helena Bonham Carter as the Red Queen were released, every other blog was talking about it. But now I want a piece of the teacake, and I thought now would be the time, since the preview for the movie was recently released. It's not a secret that I am obsessed with both Tim Burton and Lewis Carroll's book, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. And a couple of years ago, when I found out two of my favorite things were making a baby, it was very hard to contain my excitement. Did I say "excitement?" I meant "freak out." I had another episode when I saw the first preview. It was absolutely visually stunning, as all Burton films are. It looks dark, magical, twisted, beautiful. I am amazed with what they did with the Red Queen and Tweedledee and Tweedledum (Matt Lucas). And I don't think I have ever seen a film more perfectly cast (The Caterpillar - Alan Rickman; The White Rabbit - Michael Sheen; The Cheshire Cat - Stephen Fry). But I want to pay special attention to Crispin Glover (the Knave of Hearts), Helena Bonham Carter, and the man who can do no wrong, Johnny Depp. Am I the only one who thinks it is long overdue that Crispin Glover is finally in a Tim Burton movie? I am strangely attracted to him, and I think I might have to dedicate a future post to him. Helena Bonham Carter -- is there anyone else who could play the Red Queen as well as her? Johnny Depp, Johnny Depp, Johnny Depp. He looks completely unrecognizable, yet he is still beautiful. I think I want the Mad Hatter's wardrobe the most. For now on, I think all of these actors should be in all future Burton projects, except maybe Anne Hathaway. The film comes out March 5, 2010. I think I will be able to die happy after that. No... wait... I won't die happy until Tim Burton directs an adaptation of one of Neil Gaiman's novels.

Bang Bang, my bunny shot me down...

I have a new obsession -- big round sunglasses. It all started after I saw the amazingly quirky film, The Brothers Bloom. First of all, it was one of the best movies I have seen in a while. Not only did the plot and acting captivate me, the fashion drew me in as well. The characters Penelope Stamp, played by Rachel Weisz, and Bang Bang, played by Rinko Kikuchi, both had wardrobes I would kill for. Penelope was innocent and demure in her stylish dresses, black tights, and interesting coats. Bang Bang was simply a badass. She had an outfit to fit every occasion. The item she wore that I coveted the most was, of course, her sunglasses. I found similar ones on the Free People website and bought them immediately. And recently, I discovered Jenny Lewis' new video for "See Fernando," in which she plays a spy and also wears big round sunglasses! So obviously, I'm in good company. These sunglasses were made for con-women and spies. Which one will I be?

Bunnicula

There is not a new episode of True Blood tonight! This is greatly disappointing because it is what I look forward to every week. To subdue my "blood lust," I made a style guide for the heroine of True Blood, Sookie Stackhouse. Sookie is always very ladylike, although sometimes scantily clad, but who can blame her in the sweltering Louisiana heat?
